The FOUR of PENTACLES is the shadow side of the King of Pentacles. The King of Pentacles operates from abundance and generosity, while the Four of Pentacles is about scarcity and greed.
An extreme example of this card is the wealthy conservative who believes or spouts that poor people are poor because they are lazy, and rich people are rich because they work harder than anyone else.
A more personal example: When pulling this card in the present position, we are being called to look at ways in which we are being limited by our attachment to something on the material plane. It could be a number of things such as possessiveness in a relationship, unhealthy or mean spirited competition, or fear of others taking what we have. It could also be pointing to a belief that our self worth is directly related to our net worth.
Whatever the attachment, it is important for us to understand that attachment equals constriction. It's hard to really enjoy what we have when all of our energy and focus is going toward the fear of losing it.
